Tallied Statewide, majorities of whites voted for McCain only in the old Confederacy plus Oklahoma, Kentucky, and West Virginia, according to this Brad DeLong post.
The counties in which John McCain garnered a larger percentage of votes than George W. Bush did in 2004 are also in the old South (11 Confederate States plus OK, KY, and WV) plus, of course, AK and AZ. Of the good set of graphics The New York Times has here, this is the one that best tells the tale,
